Design Capabilities:
At Hewland, we have a dedicated team of nearly 20
designers and production engineers.
Each of our engineers is a
specialist in the design of motorsport transmissions and
they understand what our customers’ chassis or
powertrain engineers need from the gearbox.
We use Solid Designer, a CAD
package that is flexible enough to accept design data
from whatever programmes our clients choose to use.
Our approach is to assign a lead engineer to each
project, who acts as the interface between our design
team and our customers. While they are an expert
in their field and lead the project, the design of each
element of the transmission, from the differential to
the bearings and the gears, is always evaluated by
another engineer in the team.
In this way we ensure that at
least two experienced engineers have analysed every part
of the gearbox. Each year we make significant
investments in the latest machinery, ensuring our
customers benefit from the most advanced motorsport
transmission production facilities in the world.

Manufacturing and Production Facilities: Hewland
Engineering Ltd has been involved in the motorsport
industry since the late 1950’s; this long history has
been made possible by the continuous investment in
technology, processes and people skills. This has given us our capabilities of
today, including an enthusiastic workforce who enjoy the
challenges of new projects but also improving the
process methods used on existing components, to improve
quality, throughput and achieve our customer’s requests
and ideals. The manufacturing facility includes state of the art Turning, Milling, Gear Cutting, Heat Treatment and Grinding, including Gear Grinding. In addition to hard finishing using grinding we are also very adept at Hard Milling and Turning.

Heat Treatment Facilities: Heat treatment is mainly carried out inhouse . We have two Ibsen sealed quench furnaces which are calibrated to Aerospace standards . Our inhouse laboratory enables us to continually check and monitor all aspects of our Heat treatment and material related issues. Surface finishing of components is again carried out inhouse. All components will be treated in our vibratory deburring bowls prior to Heat Treatment and after Heat treatment, if required, gears may be shotpeened in our shotpeening department and or super finished using a non aggressive polishing process. | ||
