Da Matta CART Champion

Cristiano Da Matta took the Fed-Ex CART
Championship at Miami, Florida on Sunday 6th October. Starting from 6th on the
grid Da Matta won the race by just under a second from his team mate Christian
Fittipaldi, who set the race's fastest lap.
Driving a Newman/Haas Lola/Toyota this is Da Matta's seventh race win of the
season, allowing him to take the championship with 3 races still to go.
Hewland is proud to be a key part in this championship victory, as CART is
one of the most prestigious forms of motor sport today.

Da Matta Extends Championship Lead

After a couple of poor results Cristiano Da Matta
had a convincing win at Road America, Elkhart Lake, Wisconsin, to extend his
lead in the Fed-Ex CART championship. Starting from second on the grid a good
fuel/pit stop strategy was almost as important to this victory as Da Matta's
driving, passing Paul Tracy and Kenny Brack on the first round of pit stops and
later taking the lead from pole sitter Bruno Junqueira by delaying his stop for
an extra lap.
Da Matta's lead in the championship now stands at 42 points as the teams move
on to Montreal Canada for the next round of the championship.

Da Matta Again and
Again!

Cristiano Da Matta followed up a win at Chicago Motor Speedway with another 23
point victory in Troronto. This extends his lead in the Fed-Ex CART series to
an incredible 48 points. Da Matta has now won the last 4 races, equaling the
record set by Al Unser Jr and Alex Zanardi for consecutive CART wins.
Da Matta dominated the weekend in his Newman/Haas Lola/Toyota, starting the
race from polE and leading from start to finish, sometimes by as much as 12
seconds. Kenny Brack, in another Lola was second followed by Da Matta's team
mate Christian Fittipaldi in 3rd.
The CART circus now rolls on to Cleaveland, Ohio for a road circuit race on
13th -14th July.

Da Matta Extends His Championship Lead With
Another '23 Pointer'.
Cristano Da Matta extended his lead in the Fed-Ex CART championship
after scoring a maximum 23 points for the weekend after victory at Portland. Da
Matta's Lola started from pole but lost the lead to Kenny Brack (also in a
Lola) early in the race. This was the position until the second round of
pit-stops when Brack lost a rear wheel exiting the pit lane.
Bruno Junqueira (again in a Lola) then took up the battle and although his car
appeared slightly quicker than the eventual winner he could find no way round
Da Matta.
The championship now has a week off before resuming battle at the Chicago Motor
Speedway on 29th - 30th July.

Da Matta leads Newman-Haas 1-2 at Laguna
Seca
Cristiano Da
Matta won the latest round of the CART World Series at Laguna Seca, leading
home team mate Christian Fittipaldi for a Newman Haas 1 - 2. Da Matta lead from
pole, being virtually unchallenged for the whole race eventually finishing
10.08 seconds ahead of Fittipaldi.
Da Matta picked up a maximum 23 points for the
weekend, propelling him back to the top of the drivers championship.
The next championship race is in Portland on 16th
June.

Da Matta wins CART Season Opener - Again!
Christiano Da Matta won the CART season opener at Monterrey, Mexico on 10th
March. Victories in the last two races of the 2001 season make it three in a
row for the Brazilian Newman/Haas driver. Da Matta won the corresponding race
last season, again in his Lola-Toyota.
It took Da Matta 32 laps of the 85 lap race to work his way up from a grid
position of 5th to lead the race, but once he was there he dominated
proceedings, finally crossing the finishing line 1.7 seconds ahead of Team Kool
Green's Dario Franchitti. The winning margin would have been much higher had
there not been a late full course yellow which bunched the pack together.
Da Matta's team mate Christian Fittipaldi finished 3rd with Michael Jourdain
Jr. coming in 4th in his Team Rahal Lola-Ford. Lola drivers took 6 out of the
top 10 positions.
The championship has a short break now before moving on to the streets of Long
Beach, California on 14th April.

British F3 with new FTR gearboxes gets
underway. Tuesday March 5th.

Donington Park hosted the first official FOTA test
of the year for the British Formula 3 teams. This would not usually be a hugely
momentous occasion, but 2002 sees the advent of an all new Formula 3 gearbox,
the 6 speed sequential shift FTR.
Hewland had limited time in which to design,
manufacture and supply over 100 of these gearboxes to F3 and Formula BMW for
racing action that starts now. There were no prototypes! Over 100 of these
units had to be right first time or F3 and F. BMW would be in trouble in
various countries at once.
The gearboxes have run with amazing reliability
and the lap times are lower than last year. Hewland are proud to have launched
another winning product for general sale.
The first 2 rounds of the Japanese F3 championship
took place on 3rd March with Paolo Montin winning both races for the TOM'S team
in the new Dallara-Toyota F302 (using Hewland FTR gearbox). |
Lola's Top in Sebring Test
The new Lola
CART car filled the top three places on the time charts at the final day of
testing at Sebring. Newman/Haas driver Christiano da Matta topped the table
with Target Chip Ganassi's new signing Kenny Brack second and Team Rahal's
Jimmy Vasser 3rd. These were the only three drivers to dip below the 51 second
barrier.
Adrian Fernandez and his team were running the Lola for the first time after
switching from Reynard. "My first impressions of the car are very
good" reported the driver after posting a 51.2 second lap.
For the first time in many years new Lola's will
outnumber new Reynards on the CART grid, this follows a strong showing last
season and developments during the winter.

Hughes Impressed With New Lola F3000
The new Lola F3000 racer is a hit, according to
test driver Warren Hughes.

The new Lola Formula 3000 car had an encouraging first run at Barcelona in
Spain on Thursday (1st November) and is a marked improvement over its
predecessor, according to test driver Warren Hughes. The Briton managed around
25 laps in the B2/50 during the afternoon after suffering new-car electrical
gremlins in the morning.
Once he got running, Hughes was pleased with what he found. "Generally,
the car is very good," he said. "It's an excellent starting point.
The car is much nicer to drive than the old one in respect of better handling
and the gearbox, which needs much less effort." "It feels more like
I'd imagine an F1 car is like to drive," he added. "You don't have to
manhandle it. An element of finesse will definitely be a benefit."

Lola Launch new F3000

Lola has launched the new F3000 car that will be
used 2002 - 2005. Fighting off stiff competition from other major constructors,
Lola maintained their exclusive supply of the cars that dates back to 1996. The
gearbox on the new car is a development of the successful Hewland/Lola design
used on the Lola Champ Cars, the internals being exclusively supplied by
Hewland.
F3000 has for a long time been recognised as the stepping stone to Formula 1,
being the main support series to F1 in Europe.
The launch took place at Lola's headquarters in Huntingdon, Cambridgeshire, UK,
in the presence of FIA representatives, teams and suppliers. |
