Up to the early 1990’s, Touring Cars were using standard, ‘H’ gate transmissions. Working in conjunction with Prodrive, Hewland developed a 6 speed sequential box for the Alfa Romeo 155, providing what is widely credited as a revolutionary input into vehicle design. Alfa Romeo dominated the 1994 British Touring Car Championship and from that point Hewland has raised the bar for Touring Car competition across the world.
Hewland continued to supply transmissions into the BTCC throughout the 90’s, including the Honda Accord, (winner of the 1997 BTCC Independents Championship), providing competitors with maximum performance and reliability.
With the incarnation of the World Touring Car Championship in 2005, Hewland units quickly found more success, taking the 2008 and 2009 titles with Seat, while supporting the campaign of Chevrolet. Today, notable other achievements include the proud supply of the VW Shanghai 333 team, who secured the Chinese Touring Car Championship for 2012, and the STCC winning VW Scirocco of Johan Kristofferson. The Lada WTCC, supported by Hewland for several seasons, won two events during 2014, the teams most successful season to date.
At what could be regarded as the highest echelon of the touring car market, Hewland is proud to remain the sole transmission and semi-auto system supplier to the German DTM and Japanese GT500 series’. Our involvement with the DTM since 2000 has been testament to the durability and performance of Hewland products, including the 2012 season where every single transmission provided exceptional reliability, recording no failures.
We also supply transmissions to Nascar via a partnership with Mid Valley Engineering in the US.
