Transmission Manufacturing

Hewland is a self-contained design, build, test and manufacture transmission company schooled in the art of quick turn-around as demanded by our motorsport heritage. With all our know-how and equipment under one roof, we can develop virtually any transmission quickly and right – the first time. Furthermore, because we have our own in-house volume and mass production options, we design all our products for manufacture meaning our customers don’t have a lengthy manufacturability process to go through; whether we build the end product or not.

Hewland applies its experience across a wide range of application areas. Drawing in on 60 years of transmission design and manufacturing expertise we provide world class transmission solutions to some of the world’s largest OEMs. With our expert transmission designers, we are able to develop solutions for high performance track and road cars to 3.5 T electric delivery trucks.

Our manufacturing capabilities are flexible and scalable to meet any customer need. Whether the need is to manufacture-to-drawing, a prototype run or volume manufacture, Hewland has the flexible assembly and manufacturing capacity to meet the requirement.

Virtually all major components are manufactured in-house via our vast array of production equipment including a state of the art spiral bevel grinding machine, 5-axis pallet milling machines and a KAPP VUS-55P gear grinding machine; capable of producing gears to incredible accuracy, meeting even the extreme tolerances required for Formula 1. These racing-honed techniques are increasing important for high performance OEM and electric vehicle applications where high precision tolerances and super-fine finishes are key to improving mechanical efficiency.

Maintaining these capabilities in-house ensures reduced lead times and better quality-control; paramount on such tight tolerance parts. Hewland closely monitors the quality of its products and to ensure this, a state-of-the-art inspection department checks that all products meet our high standards. An in-house test rig guarantees that complete units are thoroughly tested and examined before they leave the premises, providing further confirmation of quality standards.

Hewland is proud of its know-how and state-of-the-art facilities for low volume production of high performance transmission systems. The step to mass production is a simple one with our production partner Hero.
