Hewland began as a company supplying gearboxes for single seat racing cars, with Formula Junior then Formula Ford being a mainstay of the business in the early years.
Today the FIA Formula 2 Championship and its GP3 sister series have become the ladder to Formula 1 and Hewland has been the sole provider of transmissions for the entire field since 2010. The bespoke unit provided to the Formula 2 and its predecessor, GP2 series, has proven to be one of the most reliable and high-performing control component transmissions in recent motorsport history. Sequential shift and an integrated semi-automatic ‘paddle-shift’ system provide the modern link that winning drivers need to progress to F1 with confidence.
With the move to bespoke gearboxes in Formula 1, Hewland supplies F1 internal component packages to customers’ specific requirements on a Make-to-Print basis for transmission and other driveline components.
Always looking to the future, Hewland did not hesitate when it was asked to provide the transmission for the inaugural formula E race series along with engine partner McLaren. The original season one race car featured a Hewland five-speed sequential transmission and McLaren motor modified from the P1 sportscar. Now with the Formula E design controls relaxed to encourage greater innovation, Hewland continues to supply transmission solutions to several teams.
With such a wide knowledge base and experience, Hewland is well positioned to provide any customer with the perfect transmission solution to their project.
