Gearbox Research and Development

As a specialist in high specification transmission design and manufacture, Hewland uses its near 60 year experience to provide its clients with cutting edge bespoke technological solutions to clients both within motorsport and across a variety of other sectors.

At the centre of our R & D capabilities is our Advanced Engineering and Design Department; a committed team approaching 20 designers and engineers, with each a specialist in their field. Utilising leading edge design and diagnostic analysis, our design personnel are tasked with ensuring the unique requirements of each client are fully supported and achieved, regardless of whether these requirements partner conventional combustion, hybrid or electric power sources.

Working closely with a number of leading supply partners we have continued to develop material and manufacturing technologies as we support extreme applications in motorsport, while developing our business in partnering clients’ own designs through precision manufacture.

With our experience in the industry, Hewland works with its clients to develop innovative and ground-breaking methods and procedures outside of Motorsport. The Company is then able to offer OEM clients the unique opportunity to witness prototypes manufactured on-site, within our specialist facilities, working alongside our engineering team to ensure seamless integration into the purpose application.

To ensure that Hewland remains at the forefront of transmission technology and manufacturing techniques, we are committed to continuous investment in new leading edge production equipment. Recent purchases include both 4 and 5 axis machining centres in addition to a number of high-specification lathes.

As a company, we remain committed to environmental sustainability and this continues to play an important part of our R & D activities and forward strategies. Hewland is engaged in working with a number of global clients, suppliers, academic and research partners, both in the UK and internationally, on a number of innovative R & D projects that further push the boundaries of cutting edge technologies.
